Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at roots.risemovement@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Understanding our mission, values and vision for positive change.

1. Is Roots & Rise Movement only for Black people?

Roots & Rise Movement exists to empower people of African descent by restoring identity, confidence and a stronger sense of purpose. While our work centres this community, we respect all communities and share a commitment to dignity, understanding and positive change.

We believe that when our community grows stronger, more confident and more resilient, everyone benefits. Stronger families, stronger leaders and stronger communities contribute positively to society as a whole.

2. Are people from other ethnic backgrounds welcome at your events?

Yes. People from all backgrounds are welcome to attend our events.

Our primary audience is people of African descent, so our programmes, curricula and discussions centre Black history, culture, resilience, achievement and development. We simply ask that all attendees engage respectfully with the purpose of the event.

3. Why does the movement focus specifically on people of African descent?

We recognise that people of African descent have unique historical and contemporary experiences that continue to shape identity, confidence and opportunity. Our focus reflects a desire to address issues relating to identity, heritage, healing and development across the global African diaspora.

Focusing on this community does not mean devaluing others. Every community has unique strengths and challenges, and we believe each deserves the opportunity to flourish.

4. Why is identity such an important part of your work?

A healthy sense of identity influences confidence, aspirations, resilience and wellbeing.

We believe that a deeper understanding of our heritage can help strengthen our sense of self, our families and our communities.

5. Are your programmes political?

No.

Roots & Rise Movement is a community organisation focused on education, leadership, personal development and positive social impact rather than party politics.

6. What age groups do you support?

Our work primarily serves children, young people and families, while also creating opportunities for adults who want to grow, learn and contribute to stronger communities.

7. Can organisations, schools and businesses partner with Roots & Rise Movement?

Yes.

We welcome partnerships with organisations, schools and businesses that share our commitment to empowering communities, developing young people and creating positive social impact.

8. What is your long-term vision?

We envision generations of confident, purpose-driven people of African descent who unapologetically know who they are, value who they are, contribute positively to society, overcome challenges and inspire future generations, while building bridges with people from every background.

9. Why focus on Black excellence?

For far too long, public narratives have often highlighted the challenges facing people of African descent more than our strengths, resilience and contributions.

Roots & Rise Movement seeks to restore balance by celebrating achievement, resilience, leadership and possibility.

Recognising excellence within one community does not diminish the achievements of any other. It enriches our shared society by ensuring every story has the opportunity to be told.

10. How can people from other backgrounds support Roots & Rise Movement?

There are many meaningful ways to support our work.

You can become an ally by encouraging and celebrating the positive transformation taking place within our community. You can help amplify our message by sharing our work, advocating for our mission and introducing others to the movement.

If you are passionate about helping us create lasting change, you can support us as an angel funder, regular donor or corporate partner. Your generosity helps us deliver programmes and opportunities that empower children, young people and families.

We believe that when one community rises, society as a whole benefits.
